Lemon grass

Written on March 1, 2008. Written by Tucker.

Lemon grass is an aromatic plant, locally called fever grass or in Spanish, Zacate limón. Every day we harvest lemongrass to make tea. It is used traditionally to reduce fevers, coughs, and colds and is especially useful for children. The essential oils from the leaves and stems increase perspiration which both cool the body and secrete toxins helping to reduce fever. Lemon grass tea is also a stimulant which can replace coffee. It eases stomach pain, relieves backache, muscle spasms, and headaches. The essential oil from fresh leaves and stems has antibacterial qualities. This is one of my favorite medicinal plants and ingredients in the kitchen.
